Privacy Policy
Coire Media is an independent, nonprofit newsroom. We hold ourselves to the same standard we hold the institutions we report on: say plainly what you do. This policy explains what information we collect when you use coiremedia.org, what we do with it, and the outside services we rely on.
The short version: you can read everything we publish without creating an account, giving us your name, or accepting tracking cookies. We do not sell personal information, we do not run advertising, and we do not follow you to other websites.
What we collect when you read
Like nearly every website, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical details for each request, such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you visit. These logs are used to keep the site running and secure, and are retained only briefly.
We use a privacy-focused analytics service that counts page views and reports aggregate information such as country and device type. It does not use cookies and does not identify individual visitors.
The site remembers which stories you have read so it can mark them on our Connect the Dots map. That record is stored only in your own browser. It is never sent to us, and clearing your browser data removes it.
Newsletter
When you enter your email address in one of our sign-up forms, we store it, along with the date and the page you signed up from, in a subscriber list that we control and that is hosted for us by Neon, a database provider, and we add it to our Mailchimp audience, the service we use to send the newsletter. We use that list only to send you our reporting, and we never sell or share it. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can ask to be removed at any time by emailing the address below. Our Substack publication is a separate, optional subscription: we never add you to it unless you sign up there yourself, and you can manage your subscription on Substack. Substack’s handling of your data is governed by its own privacy policy.
Donations
Donations are processed by Stripe. Card details are entered on Stripe’s secure checkout page and are never seen or stored by us. Stripe shares with us the information needed to record your gift and send a receipt, typically your name, email address, and the amount and date of the donation. We use that information for acknowledgments, tax receipts, and the records a 501(c)(3) nonprofit is required to keep.
We do not sell, rent, or trade donor information, and we do not publish donor names without permission. To change or cancel a recurring donation, or to ask about any gift, email us at the address below. Stripe’s handling of payment data is described in its own privacy policy.
Tips and sources
If you send us a tip, we keep what you share confidential. We will not disclose the identity of a source without that person’s consent, and we treat the content of tips as confidential reporting material. Email is not a fully secure channel, so share only what you are comfortable sending and, if your information is sensitive, contact us first so we can arrange a more secure way to talk.
Other services and links
Our stories link to outside sources, and we maintain accounts on other platforms such as Instagram. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control. We do not embed third-party advertising or social-media tracking on coiremedia.org.
Children
Our site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information we hold, and we rely on established providers for hosting, email, and payments. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee the security of information sent to us over the internet.
Your choices
You never need an account to use our site. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time, block analytics with standard browser tools without losing access to anything, and clear the reading history stored in your browser whenever you like. If you would like to see, correct, or delete information we hold about you, such as donation records or correspondence, email us and we will respond as promptly as we can.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change, we will update this page and revise the date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted in our newsletter.
